The people behind PBS’ Reading Rainbow television series recently kicked off the 2009 Young Writers and Illustrators contest, and they’re offering some very grown-up prizes. The best stories will net a few lucky kids (and their families) flat panel TVs with DVD players. Other awards include digital cameras and MP3 players.
I’m glad the contest is offering pricey prizes, because it shows the organizers are serious about getting children to read, write and be creative. Smaller competitions are nice, but I think this contest will encourage parents to challenge their children to work hard.
In order to win, participants must write and illustrate their very own story about the topic of their choosing. There will be a first, second and third place winner in each grade level from kindergarten through third grade. Last year's winners included stories about a family "zoo”, a monster that hides in a kid's pocket and the adventures of a traveling ant (spoiler alert: the destination is the kitchen counter).
Not every TV affiliate is involved in the contest, but if your local station isn’t participating, your child can still compete as an Independent Entry. Visit PBS for complete rules. Will you encourage your child to enter? You never know, they could become a blogger one day.
